Today is my only grandson's birthday. Every old crow thinks hers is the blackest, but I have no doubt - this young man is exceptional. I watched him grow up in adversity and then lose his mother just under four years ago. If I have ever seen a trophy of God's grace, J.D. is that trophy. His mother read to him consistently when he was a child. In school, he was bored because he was so advanced. That got him into trouble, but God's providence was at work even in that.
J.D. has been in church all of his life. As a pastor and former seminary professor, I shared my library and tutored him in theology. I took him to pastors' conferences and seminars. During a session at one of R.C. Sproul's seminars we attended together, J.D. lit up. He found his level. He began listening to and reading Sproul. He read Augustine, John Gill, Jonathan Edwards and many others. He carries a copy of puritan prayers and shares his faith with other young people.
Fourteen months ago, J.D. married Mindy Francisco. They are expecting a baby girl, my great grandchild, in December. No surprise, Mindy is a school teacher and a dedicated Christian. They walk with the LORD, serve Him in our church where J.D. is a candidate to become an elder. Do not tell me that God is not still at work in His church. There is a great future.
