The South is a wonderful place. It is rife with strong opinion, and we love it. I went through twelve grades of public shool without a black child in the building. We opened every school day with prayer and the pledge to the American flag. In the 60s we were bogged down in constant protests against the Viet Nam war and racial demonstrations. But we were determined to hold on to our segregated way of life at any cost. We voted for Alabama Governor George Wallace when he split the Democratic Party and ran for president of the United States as a third party candidate in defiance of any form of integration. My son was bussed to school in a black neighborhood and some of the black children were bussed to the school in our neighborhood to achieve a balance of races in the system. We raged, moved to the suburbs, vowed that we would not stand for it and started schools in our churches. The federal government prevailed. Today, we hardly remember what the fuss was all about.
Our current passion is gun control. We will fuss, protest, swear at the president, and make the gun dealers rich. But it will turn out like integration and forty years from now (I won't be here but) my grandchildren can wonder why we were in such a lather.
